Introduction
Sheng Hua Tang, literally translated as “Decoction for Generating and Transforming,” is a classic formula in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) with a history spanning several centuries. First recorded in traditional obstetric texts, it has long been used in East Asian cultures as a postpartum tonic to support the body’s natural recovery process after childbirth. The name reflects its traditional role in promoting renewal, circulation, and balance during the critical postnatal period.
Ingredients
- Dang Gui (Angelica sinensis, 當歸)
- Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong, 川芎)
- Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, 桃仁)
- Zhi Gan Cao (Honey-fried Licorice Root, 炙甘草)
- These herbs are traditionally combined to nourish and harmonize the body while supporting healthy circulation and overall postpartum vitality.
When to Use
Sheng Hua Tang is traditionally taken after childbirth, once delivery is complete and the body begins its recovery phase. In TCM practice, it is commonly used during the early postpartum period to support general well-being, particularly when rest, warmth, and gentle nourishment are emphasized. It is not intended for use during pregnancy and should be consumed as part of a culturally rooted postpartum care routine.
